DIY Lip Balm Base: Vegan Un-Petroleum Jelly
| September 19, 2011 | Posted by herbanluxe under DIY Recipes |
I have met a single person who does not appreciate a good lip balm. In fact, I know a few people who are addicted to their lip balm. You may have one a lip balm addict in your pack, you know the one who pulls his/her lip balm out every 5 minutes and runs it across their lips. If you take their lip balm away, they fell lost.
They are addicted to the feeling of extra moisture on their lips, something they may have not had before. According to Lisa Garner. M.D., a dermatologist Baylor Medical Center at Garland, ”When you put a lip balm on your lips you actually block the loss of natural moisture into the environment.” Honestly, they also state that the use of lip balm doesn’t cause any actual problems, so you are free to continue over moisturizing your lips.
Now the bad thing about most lip balms is the ingredients used to create them. Which turns something that isn’t bad for your into something that isn’t all the great for you. Now I know, the amount of ingredients in the average size lip balm is insufficient to cause any harm. In this post, I will share a simple recipe with you that leave you and your lip balm addict friends licking their lips wanting more.
The base for this recipe would call for Petroleum Jelly, of which I’m not a really big fan. Traditional Petroleum Jelly is petroleum by-product of petroleum. It was first discovered in 1859 by oil riggers who struggled with the paraffin like film that would clog rigs causing them to malfunction. Today, petroleum jelly is made from a mixture of mineral oils, paraffin and microcrystalline waxes. But here’s a great alternative to Petroleum Jelly, its Un-Petroleum Jelly and my recipe is vegan as it does not use beeswax as many recipes call for.
The Lip Balm Base – Vegan Un-Petroleum Jelly
Ingredients:
1/4 cup Candelilla Wax (this is a leaf extract)
1 cup of Jojoba Oil or Sweet Almond Oil (you can choose to use a different oil of your choosing)
(makes about 10 oz.)
What to do:
Pour both ingredients in a microwave safe container. Place container in microwave and heat for about 2 minutes using the defrost setting on your microwave.
Additives:
Now it’s time to have some fun. Pour two ounces of your mixture into another heat safe container while still melted, then experiment by adding one of the following to your base:
1/4 teaspoon of cocoa powder, or
1/4 teaspoon of Jell-0 crystals, or
1 teaspoon of Honey and 2 drops of vanilla
1/2 teaspoon of matcha (green tea) **one of my favorites***
you can also add a few drops of food coloring
Mix your additive until completely dissolved. You can add divide your mixture by pour it into heat safe containers, if you wish to experiment with different flavors and colors.
Give it a try and have fun!

I really need to try this. Surely I’m not the only person out here who has reactions to lip balms? I’ve only found one lip balm that doesn’t result in a breakout of blisters and I’m so tired of it. I even have to be weary of lipsticks and glosses. I’m not sure it’s the petroleum in them or not since I can’t seem to rule out any ingredient based on their labeling….but if this works then I’ll have an infinite number of possibilities of my own making. COLORS! FLAVORS! BOTH COLOR AND FLAVOR! Let’s hope it works for me!
I like this website because so much useful stuff on here.
This is a great recipe. I was having a really hard time finding a vegan alternative to Vaseline and this one is perfect.
